The Mountaineers headed down to Blackfalds for some pre-season action this weekend and got a little taste of what the season will have in store. This tournament was a great opportunity for developing future players getting some reps in. Head Coach Joe Vetere knows the importance of developing the full 50-man group, commenting, “In order to have success now and in the future, we must teach and educate our younger players, which will develop the program as a whole.”
The whole group is excited moving into the season and looking to bring their experience from last year into the upcoming season. Veteran goaltender, also known as “Skinny Doug” had a smile on his face talking about starting the season and bringing back an experienced group. “We only lost four guys from last season, so we have high expectations about what the boys can do this year.” The veteran put an emphasis on cardio this offseason and impressively went from 270 pounds to 195, hence his nickname of “Skinny Doug.” From the sounds of it, the boys having been putting in the effort during the off-season to prepare for the regular season.
The vibe coming from management and the players is that they are excited. Head coach says it “starts with everyone at training camp… the kids are optimistic and are continuing to move forward as a team.” The Mountaineers are ready to follow last year’s success and itching to start playing this season.
