A slow start combined with a late breakdown led the Mounties to losing game one of the final series. This game had comebacks and excellent goaltending, making it a great one for the fans. Even though the Mounties outshot the Raiders 48 to 38… they still couldn’t seem to bring home that W. The boys play again tonight, Thursday, July 27 at 8:30 pm at Max Bell to try and even up the series and head back to the Peppardome on level playing field for games 3 and 4.
The first was not the start the team was looking for, giving up four goals out of the gate. Willis and Luitweiller scored back to back with roughly five minutes left to cut the score to two before the Raiders got one late to head to the dressing room up by three. Raiders were up 5-2 after one.
The second had a different story line. Our Mountaineers fought back and were not going to go away without a fight. The Raiders scored one early to take a four-goal lead but then the boys scored four unanswered to tie it up! Raiders then buried one more to regain the lead but Graden put one past the keeper to tie the game back up at 7’s. Unfortunately, the Raiders snuck one home with 43 seconds left to take an 8-7 lead after two periods of play.
History of the first repeated itself in the third with the Raiders coming out hot and catching the Mounties on their heels. With five unanswered goals by the Raiders and only seven minutes left to play, the game was out of reach for the Mounties to come back. Foster buried the lone goal late to bring the game within five but that is how the game finished, with a 13-8 loss to our rivals.
Out-shooting our opponents by ten shows great potential for some high offence in game two. If the boys can slow down the quick starts out of the gate by the Raiders, the fellas will have a chance to take home game two and even up the series. Hope to see you all at Max Bell to cheer on the boys!
